Summary of Laser Thread Vein Treatment

The Science

Sensitive lasers are used to target and break down the unwanted veins through a process called photothermolysis. The laser is administered in short bursts to avoid harming the dermis. The chromophore for the laser is the hemoglobin in the vessels and therefore the light travels harmlessly through the epidermis and dermis until it strikes the target area and eliminates vascular lesions such as thread veins, spider veins, broken capillaries by absorption of the light by the hemoglobin. When the temperature reaches about 60-70C, the blood coagulates, and the inner cells of the blood vessels denature. This causes the vein vessel to collapse and dissolve. Over the following 8 weeks post treatment, the body’s lymphatic system will work to remove and carry away the coagulated cells and leave the skin vein free.

The Treatment

Thread veins are tiny blood vessels, which run close to the surface of the skin and look like fine red, or sometimes purple, wiggly lines.

They're also sometimes called 'spider veins' or 'broken veins', although the veins aren't infact broken but only slightly enlarged.

The medical term for them is telangiectasia .Leg thread veins can be removed quickly and easily.

Red, purple and blue veins up to 3mm can be treated with the Nd:YAG laser.

The end result will be clearer skin and less defined leg thread veins, with benefits seen after just one session.

What to Expect

Following an in-depth consultation with one of our laser therapists, and patch test will be carried out, to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions to the treatment. When you return for your first treatment, your therapist will conduct a quick check of the patch test area, and screen for any recent sun exposure, new medication and other contraindications. After this, your treatment will begin. Your treatment will take place in a bright, clean and airy clinic room, with your therapist ensuring you are comfortable and relaxed throughout.
